Forklift Inspection Checklist

To comply with OSHA health and safety rules, forklift trucks must be inspected at least daily, or after each shift when used around the clock. (Documented in the OHSA standards for Powered Industrial Trucks – 1910.178(q)(7))

OSHA standards do not insist that forklift safety inspections are recorded, but using a forklift inspection checklist, whether handwritten or digital, is a sensible policy for two reasons:

1. You can see that proper inspection routines are being followed, thus ensuring that your forklifts are in good working order.
2. You have bank of clear evidence that can be provided to an OSHA inspector.

In some states, it is a requirement to retain inspection reports. For example, in California, the daily inspection log can be considered a record of a scheduled inspection to identify unsafe conditions. In California, such records must be retained for one year under Cal/OSHA regulation §3203(b).
